“Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.” As said here by Peter Drucker, leadership is not defined by what title you hold or whether or not you can “act the part,” but by the results your leadership creates. Lauren Zeinstra is an excellent example of this passage, which is why she deserves the award for November’s First Year Student of the Month. I met Lauren during check-in at Stampede Freshman Leadership Camp and she immediately caught my attention with her cheerful attitude at eight in the morning. Throughout Stampede, she continued to amaze me with her constant enthusiasm and involvement in social activities, seminars, and program sessions, despite the negative attitudes of many of her fellow students in the program. Lauren continued to amaze me with her hard work during move-in week activities and early initiative in College Inn Hall Council. I was very disappointed when Lauren lost the election for Hall Council President but the thing that impresses me the most about her is that she wouldn’t let this loss deter her from being involved in Hall Council and RHA and quickly took on the roles of Vice President and Representative to RHA. In fact, the single most amazing thing about Lauren is that she never lets any setback seriously derail her and always comes out of any loss with the knowledge of how to prevent it next time and a renewed enthusiasm for whatever she is doing. In College Inn Hall Council, Lauren handled the majority of the planning for their biggest program, the 80’s Highlighter Party and always plays an integral role in anything that the Hall Council does. Besides the two positions she already holds, she is oftentimes the acting President of College Inn as their elected president is frequently absent due to serious health concerns. Lauren has stepped up to the challenge of running Hall Council, executing programs, and making sure everything runs smoothly overall. During much of this year she was without a Hall Director or full-time support from RHA. One of the most important aspects of Lauren’s involvement is in RHA as a whole, most specifically during IACURH. She volunteered for IACURH without any knowledge of what her commitment entailed and truly stepped up to the challenge presented. Despite being given less-than- ideal circumstances, she was able to effectively teach our delegation the roll call and motivate them to succeed in a very short amount of time. Also, she presented a program on Environmental Sustainability and its application to a university setting as a first-time delegate. All of her hard work at the conference could not sate her appetite for more
involvement however and she just recently took on the role of Spirit Chair for the IACURH 2008 Conference Staff. What is the most significant about all of this however is that she manages to accomplish all that she does while remaining highly involved in Solar Fest and taking a challenging course load as a freshman Business Marketing major. Because of her unbeatable attitude, indomitable enthusiasm, intense passion for what she does, and her refusal to let any setback she faces derail her, Lauren Zeinstra is more than deserving of November’s First Year Student of the Month Award.

It is with great honor and pride that I write this letter for Lauren Zeinstra. Lauren was a student here at Fairview High, and I have had the pleasure of working with her on a couple of projects. I see her as a leader, a motivator of others, and a caring individual who has come to achieve great success.
Lauren was a Link commissioner for the ‘Links’ program. Links is a nationally recognized program, that we use here at Fairview High School, which is designed to match junior and senior leaders with incoming 9th graders. The main goal is to help with transition, and show them about positive involvement and growth within the high school experience. Lauren is instrumental in getting the many tasks associated with the program done, which is why she was selected from a field of over 250 applicants during her junior year.
Lauren is a resourceful manager. She is imaginative, creative, and definitively knows how to utilize all her means to achieve her goals. Lauren is a visual person, and can easily get her ideas through to others. She works well under pressure, and seems to make all deadlines with quality work. This makes her well known and admired by the majority of her peers, and easy to work with from an adult perspective as well.
Lauren makes herself useful within a team, as with the DECA talent show. She took much of the leadership on herself, and allowed for the natural process to occur for success. She was responsible for bringing this event to the school, which was the first time something of this magnitude had ever happened. She will also bring the portfolio of this event to the National DECA conference this February.
Lauren is the kind of student that I enjoy having in my school. She is bright and witty, and has a lot of experiences to draw from. She balances her time well, which is a skill needed by many teenagers. Lauren has the ability to set aside personal issues when a greater cause is at hand. I would recommend Lauren for any program that she applies for; I know that she and the program would benefit and grow together from the experience.

To this day, Lauren Zeinstra has been one of my most outstanding students. She was a senior in 2007 at Fairview High School, and in my Marketing class. Marketing is a year long elective course that prepares students for a career in Marketing.
Lauren was an advisor of the Fairview DECA (Distributive Educational Clubs of America) chapter. She participated in running our club’s business, The Medieval Bean, which is a small coffee café and fundraiser for our chapter. Additionally, Lauren placed as a finalist in the 2007 District 3 DECA competition, which took place at Johnson and Wales University in Denver, CO. She competed in the role play area of financial analysis team. Lauren also attended the Colorado State DECA competition and competed in the written event category for learn and earn project. She is highly energized about working with event planning and management and helped with getting other students excited and motivated for competition.
Lauren has exceeded my expectations a number of times since I have met her. She brings real world experiences to the classroom with her everyday. Her senior year, she organized a fundraiser, the first ever school talent show for students and teachers. This was something that she completely volunteered to do with another classmate, and was above and beyond club and course requirements. The event was a huge success and raised money for our DECA marketing club as well as a portion which was donated to the Children’s Hospital.
Lauren was responsible for holding meetings with student and teacher performers, auditions, working with school administrators on logistics, ticket sales, advertising, and Master of Ceremonies. She is very creative, and has an extended understanding of marketing as well as promotion. Her most distinguishable qualities include motivation, care for community, reliability, and experience. When an opportunity comes along to get more involved, she is the first student to raise her hand to participate.
I am honored to recommend Lauren Zeinstra to your program, and expect immense accomplishments for her future. Although she has room to grow, she is someone people can count on, mature, realistic, and trustworthy. Thank you for your consideration.
Respectfully,
